It's usually normal to have a delayed period after having a baby. The recovery time of postpartum menstruation varies from person to person, mainly related to breastfeeding methods, hormone levels and individual differences.

In lactating women, high levels of prolactin can inhibit ovarian ovulation, leading to delayed menstruation for several months or even longer. Mothers who exclusively breastfeed may not resume menstruation until 6-12 months after giving birth, while mixed feeders usually resume menstruation at 3-8 months. Most women who are not breastfeeding will have their first menstrual period 6-10 weeks after giving birth. This physiological amenorrhea is a self-protective mechanism of the body that helps avoid premature pregnancy again.

In a few cases, it is necessary to be alert to pathological factors. If there is still no menstruation after 3 months of stopping breastfeeding, or if the cycle does not resume six months after giving birth in a non-breastfeeding woman, it may indicate abnormal ovarian function, thyroid disease or pituitary gland disease. When accompanied by abnormal lactation, headache, and vision changes, the possibility of pituitary tumor needs to be ruled out. Severe intrauterine adhesions after cesarean section may also lead to amenorrhea, often accompanied by periodic lower abdominal pain.

Postpartum, attention should be paid to recording menstrual recovery time and cycle changes, and avoiding excessive dieting or strenuous exercise. Contraception is still needed during lactation because ovulation may occur earlier than menstruation resumes. If persistent amenorrhea occurs along with other discomforts, it is recommended to go to the gynecology department for six hormone tests, ultrasound and other examinations. Maintaining a balanced diet on a daily basis and supplementing iron-containing foods such as lean meat and animal liver in an appropriate amount will help restore regular menstruation.
